You know how sometimes you walk into a place and you just feel it? That warmth, that sense that the people behind it actually care? That was The Velvet Crab from the moment we stepped through the door. The restaurant has this beautiful, atmospheric quality to it. Green velvet touches, soft lighting, candles flickering on the shelves. It feels sophisticated but not stuffy, fancy but genuinely welcoming. The kind of place where you can be yourself.
The team made us feel like we were honoured guests, not just customers popping in for lunch. There was laughter from the moment we sat down, real laughter that filled the room. When you're with good people in a good space, it changes everything about the experience.
The Seafood Boil Experience
Then came the seafood boil. I'm talking proper, magnificent seafood here. Prawns piled high, fresh mussels, gorgeous cooked seafood glistening in a black bowl. It was beautiful to look at, but the point was to dive in and get properly stuck in.

Rolling up our sleeves and getting properly stuck in
We were given gloves, we rolled up our sleeves, and we got our hands stuck in. This isn't dainty eating. This is joyful, indulgent, face-forward seafood eating. There's something about cracking open shells with your own hands, peeling prawns, tasting that freshness, that brings people together. The whole table was leaning in, eating with our hands, laughing, helping each other reach the best bits.
The bold flavours came through beautifully. Jake Puddy, the head chef and proprietor, has a real passion for flavours that aren't afraid to be themselves. He makes his own sauces, and you can taste the difference. Everything is intentional. Everything has been thought about.

Meeting the Passion Behind the Kitchen
What I loved about meeting Jake was how much he cares about the food he's putting out. He's not doing what everyone else does. He's doing what he believes in. That sauce, that seasoning, that approach to seafood, it comes from genuine passion and craft. In a world where so much food is just about hitting a price point or following a formula, it's genuinely refreshing to be in a place where the chef wants the food to taste brilliant, full stop.

Meeting the magic behind the menu
The whole experience was a reminder of why food matters. It's not just fuel. It's connection. It's time with people you want to be around. It's tasting something that someone has genuinely cared about making.

Something Special is Coming
Now, here's where I get excited. Momma Cherri and The Velvet Crab are cooking up something special together. Something we're planning for Sunday, 23 August 2026.
I can't say too much just yet, but trust me, if you know me and you know what The Velvet Crab is about, you'll want to pay attention when we announce the details. This is the kind of collaboration that only happens when two people who believe in good food and good people get together.

The excitement is real
Watch this space.
For now, if you're in Brighton or nearby, get yourself to The Velvet Crab. Walk through that door. Feel the warmth. Order the seafood boil. Get your hands stuck in. Sit with people who matter. That's what it's all about.

Good people. Good food. Good times.
